Self-esteem and self-confidence overlap, but they are different. If people have low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, they may have an unbalanced view of themselves and feel doubtful of their abilities or what they have to offer.

Self-esteem is how someone perceives themselves and how they feel about who they are and what they do. A person with high levels of self-esteem will feel positive about themselves and recognize their good qualities. In contrast, someone with low self-esteem may feel negatively about themselves and may not see themselves as worthy of love, feeling good, or having a successful, happy life. Low self-esteem may cause you to develop a strong critical internal voice (an ‘inner critic’) that tends to express itself loudly when you’re feeling distressed, overwhelmed or judged by others. This inner critic can cause significant personal distress by contributing to feelings of sadness, anxiety or anger.

Confidence is the belief someone has in themselves, their abilities, and their ideas. If a person has confidence, they generally understand and accept themselves as they are. Low self-confidence can result in shyness, communication difficulties, social anxiety and lack of assertiveness

Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence can negatively affect people’s relationships, work, or studies. Without interventions, it may also have a negative effect on their mental and physical health.

Low Self-Esteem & Low Self Confidence Treatment

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)  is a well-established and highly effective psychological approach used to treat a wide range of mental health issues, including low self-esteem and low self-confidence. CBT focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours contributing to low self-esteem and low self-confidence, helping individuals build a healthier self-concept and improved emotional well-being.

CBT offers a structured and evidence-based approach to enhance them significantly. Through CBT, individuals gain the tools to recognize and challenge their negative thought patterns and self-perceptions. This process helps individuals develop a more realistic and balanced self-evaluation. By learning to identify and replace self-critical or irrational beliefs with healthier, more positive ones, CBT empowers individuals to build self-confidence and self-worth. Over time, individuals undergoing CBT tend to experience improved emotional well-being, healthier relationships, and a greater sense of self-acceptance, ultimately leading to a more positive self-image and a fulfilling life.
